Lakehead Orillia Thunderwolves Weekend recap

Orillia, Ont. - The Lakehead Orillia Thunderwolves varsity soccer program kicked off the regular season on the road in Sudbury last week with matches against the Cambrian College Golden Shield. The Orillia Thunderwolves women’s team came out on top with a 1-0 win, while the men faced their first loss with a score of 7-1. 

Soccer action continued into the weekend as the Orillia Thunderwolves welcomed the Loyalist Lancers and Centennial Colts to the West Orillia Sports Complex for the inaugural home opener. The women’s soccer team finished a tense match against the Lancers, ending in a 2-2 tie, while the men closed out the weekend with a 4-1 loss to the Colts squad.

The men’s and women’s squads will face off against the Seneca College Sting this Saturday at the West Orillia Sports Complex, starting at 1:00 pm.

Athletes of the Week

The Orillia Thunderwolves are celebrating this season’s first athletes of the week: Holden Vuksan and Monica Sousa.

Orillia Thunderwolves goalkeeper, Holden Vuksan, made 20 saves over the course of the men’s soccer team's first two games and is recognized by the OCAA for his grit, focus, and determination.

Women’s striker Monica Sousa has made a huge impact so far this season, scoring her first varsity career goal in the game against the Golden Shield, followed by two more in Sunday’s home opener against the Lancers, helping Lakehead secure a top 10 spot in league standings. Monica has also been recognized as an OCAA Star of the Week.
