The Lakehead Orillia Thunderwolves Men's Extramural Hockey Team traveled down to Leaside Memorial Gardens in Toronto to participate in the 2024 Helder Cup Invitational hosted by the George Brown Huskies.
The Thunderwolves matched up against Ontario Tech University in game one of the round-robin play, which saw the Ridgebacks get off to a quick start scoring with their first shot of the game to put the Thunderwolves down early in the game. Despite the slow start, the Thunderwolves were able to battle back with a true team performance that saw 12 different players register a point in the 7-2 victory. Leading the way was forward, Jackson Arcan, who had an impressive four-goal game which helped spark the comeback for Lakehead.
In game two, the Thunderwolves went up against Sheridan Bruins with the winner moving on to the championship game. The Thunderwolves got off to a quick start, taking the lead early in the first period. Even after running into some penalty trouble, the Thunderwolves were able to hold off Sheridan for a 5-0 win. Shutting the door was goalie Ian Crane, helping lead the team to a birth in the championship game.
The final game of the day, the championship game, saw the Thunderwolves go face-to-face with tournament host George Brown College. Much like their last game, the Thunderwolves got off to a quick start in the first period and never looked back. Goaltender Tyler Jackman put together a stellar performance posting a shutout giving his team everything they needed en route to a 5-0 championship win.
The Thunderwolves finished the semester winning the 2024 Helder Cup Invitational and will be back on the ice in the new year.
