On Friday, March 6, the Men's and Women's Extramural Basketball teams travelled to Brantford, Ontario to participate in the final OCR Basketball tournament of the year at Laurier Brantford.
This was the third and final tournament of the year for the Women's team. They came into the tournament on an 8-0 record having won the OCR Championship Banners at the Humber North and Seneca King Tournaments earlier in the season.
The team faced Seneca King in their first game and easily defeated them 58-25. Breanna Shaw led the team this game scoring from outside the three point line, in the paint and from the free throw line. Hannah Clark also had a tremendous game scoring points and setting up her teammates.
Next, the Thunderwolves faced Humber North. They came out hot at the start of this game going up quickly against Humber. Humber was able to battle their way back into the game but the Thunderwolves regained their composure and were able to secure the game with a 32-23 victory over the Hawks.
In the final round robin game of the day, they faced the host Laurier Brantford Golden Hawks. The Thunderwolves weren't able to separate themselves from the Golden Hawks until they hit their stride in the third quarter. Key baskets by player-coach Gia Spiropolous, rookie Avery Williams and Veteran Hannah Clarke led the team to defeat the Golden Hawks 41-31.
The Thunderwolves faced Humber North in the finals. The Thunderwolves had their eye on the Championship banner as they headed into the final game of the day and of the season. The Thunderwolves played their game and it was clear to see why this team was 11-0 on the season. The Thnderwolves were strong offensively led by ball carriers and point scorers Breanna Shaw and Hannah Clark. Gia Spiropoulos was a force to be reckoned with in the paint on both ends of the court. Great defensive play by Avery Williams, Anna Clarke, Chelsea Wopnford and Allana Padua were able to stop the Humber North attack. The Thunderwolves finished their season with a 47-24 victory securing their third OCR CHampionship banner of the season and a perfect 12-0 season.
We are so proud of the success of this team this season and look forward to continued success next season!
