Thunderwolves attend OCAA Varsity Indoor Soccer Regionals

Thunderwolves attend OCAA Varsity Indoor Soccer Regionals
The Women's Varsity Indoor Soccer team travelled to North York, ON to the the Sting Dome at Seneca College to compete in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Regional Tournament on Wednesday, March 4.

The team has been training since September in preparation for this tournament in which the top two teams from each pool qualify for the OCAA Provincial Championships. This year, they brought in their first recruitment class consisting of 6 incoming student-athletes. The team competed in a Women's League in Barrie in the winter and finished 3rd. They have been practicing weekly and taking part in strength and conditioning sessions with strength and conditioning coach Taylor Bazinet from Peak Performance.

The women's team came out hot defeating the Confederation Thunderhawks 3-0. The team quickly settled into the game, creating opportunities and working well as a team. Katherine Hornick scored the first goal of the day. Persistence in front of the net and a deflection was all it took to get the first goal. Chauntelle Palmer scored the second goal of the game for the Thunderwolves making a great run down the middle of the field, cutting left on the defender to get into the box where she calmly put the ball in the back of the next. The final goal of the game came in the second half. Grace Heywood played a beautiful ball through to Rachel Looby who was making a run down the right wing. Looby was able to beat the keeper who came out to try and deny the goal. Goalkeeper Ashley McLetchie was solid for the Thunderwolves and earned the shutout.

The women's team then faced three tough opponents in the Mohawk Mountaineers, the Seneca Sting and the Durham Lords. All 3 of these teams compete in the varsity outdoor season with Seneca finishing 1st and Durham finishing 3rd in the East Division. Mohawk finished 5th in the West Division.

They were unable to overcome any of these opponents but battled hard the entire day. They were defeated by Mohawk (5-0), Seneca (6-0) and Durham (7-1) in their final games. Ally Morris scored the final goal of the day with a long range shot that went bar down and crossed the goal line.

This is a young team with 11 first-year players on the team. Despite their youthfulness, they battled hard and should be proud of their performance. With all players eligible to return for next season, we are looking forward to seeing how this program continues to grow.
